Rookie right-hander Michael Pineda wasn't afraid to walk Philadelphia slugger Ryan Howard to load the bases in the sixth inning. The move paid off. Pineda wriggled out of a jam in the sixth after giving up his first hit, helping the Seattle Mariners end the Phillies' season-high seven-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory Friday night.

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter was rushed to the emergency room on Thursday night after experiencing a "serious coughing attack" and having "shooting pains in his back," his daughter, Kimmy Bloemers, wrote on a private family website Friday.

Joe Mauer was home again, back in Minnesota. He looked as normal as could be, crouching behind the plate and batting third for the Twins. For Mauer, though, this was no ordinary game. Danny Valencia welcomed an admittedly nervous Mauer back with a three-run home run in the first inning Friday, and the Twins held on to beat the San Diego Padres 6-5 for their fifth straight win.

Longtime NFL defensive end Raheem Brock was arrested in his hometown of Philadelphia after a dispute at a restaurant. Police Lt. Raymond Evers says Brock ran out on a $27 bar tab at Copabanana on Thursday. Bartender Rob Harris tells WTXF-TV that Brock's party was asked to leave after one of them brought in food from another eatery.
